According to 1 John 4:1, what should believers do with spirits?

Believers are called to discern spiritual claims rather than accept every message as from God. 1 John 4:1 instructs that we should test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. The emphasis is on exercising discernment to identify true from false teaching. In practice, this testing involves measuring what is taught against the gospel about Jesus Christ—does the spirit confess Jesus as coming in the flesh and align with the biblical truth about Him? This guide helps believers avoid being swayed by deceptive teachings and stay grounded in Scripture and the truth about Jesus.
